Yet some of his hotels aren't branded as either-for example, the Hilton in Seoul and the Grand Hyatt in Taipei. At the moment, Kwek is using two brands, Millennium and Copthorne of the two, Millennium is the one being built into the flagship brand. A good brand alone, Kwek says, can deliver 12% of a chain's room nights, a margin that in the hotel business can spell the difference between making money and losing it. Melding Kwek's existing properties (and ones he intends to acquire) into a global brand with the recognition value of, say, Sheraton or Westin, both now owned by Starwood, will be a daunting challenge. and European chains, such as Marriott (390,000 rooms), Bass (491,000) or Starwood (227,000), in their own backyards. But no Asian hotelier has challenged the big U.S. There have, of course, been some spectacular regional successes, among them Robert Kuok's Shangri-La chain, Adrian Zecha's Amanresorts and Ho Kwon Ping's Banyan Trees. And a kid with big plans: His ambition is to create the first global hotel brand to come out of Asia. "We're the new kid on the block," says Kwek with pride. Benny Chew, an analyst with ing Barings in Singapore, estimates that CDL's 2001 hotel revenue will be $1.1 billion. (Compare the Four Seasons, with 14,000 rooms, or Shangri-La, with 19,000.) Ranking by room count, Hotels magazine puts CDL 34th among global chains. Today CDL owns 89 properties with a total of 24,000 rooms spread across Asia, Europe and the U.S., ( see chart). After you climb up, proceed along the upper path to pick up the W MACHINE GUN. Hold right and press to catch the right side, enabling you to reach a STAR PENDANT. Hold left and press repeatedly to catch the support structure on the left side, allowing you to grab the WIZARD STAFF as you climb up. Jump to safety if you wish, but by allowing yourself to fall, you'll get the chance to pick up two valuable items. As you begin along the upper path, the tracks will give way. Climb the mountain path, descend to the Corel Reactor, and proceed along the railroad tracks until they split into upper and lower paths.
